Here is portion of the nomination stories presented on each of the women named to the Hall of Fame. Each year, the district names two people to the Hall of Fame. The program began in 1999 with the induction of five people. Two people have been named each year since.
.
Emma Ola Michael: She began her teaching career at the Carithers Grammar School in 1938. Her career that spanned more than 36 years. She was an elementary school teacher for 29 years. When the county schools were consolidate in the late 1960s, she went to Oconee County Elementary School and taught until her retirement in 1974.
.
"She was a born teacher. She did her very best each day to encourage, inspire and guide the students to achieve. She expected respect for fellow students, colleagues and herself from all students. Mrs. Michael's classroom was quiet, orderly, friendly and conducive to learning. I, for one, became a teacher because of her love for teaching," Barbara Downs said.
.
"She taught my older sister, myself and one of my children. She once visited my home church and all of her former students were asked to stand. Almost half the congregation stood," Charles H. Cooper said.
.
"Ms. Michael dedicated her life to the children of Oconee County and she was admired an loved by all of her students and their parents during her teaching career. Even after retiring, Ms. Michael remembers and greets students that she sees in public and always has an encouraging word for a student's college career or employment pursuits. She was such an asset to our school system and to the community; a rare jewel," M. Kim Michael said.
.
"I had the pleasure of her teaching both of my girls in elementary school. She has several of her students (who) are retired educators today. This certainly speaks well for her teaching success. Mrs. Michael was not just an excellent teacher, she was a good wife and mother. Her husband was chairman of the Oconee County Commission for many years and her son was assistant attorney general for the state of Georgia," Sammy Sanders said.
