Margaret Johnson (Miss Margaret) taught for years in the Elementary School at Watkinsville. She retired in 1976. She was my Fourth Grade teacher in 49-50 at Watkinsville. After that year, she took a leave of absence and gave birth to her daughter, Nan. I remember that as a class we contributed toward buying her a little baby gift and I was asked to present it in front of the class. I really liked Miss Margaret and kind of had a crush on her!
She was a caring and loving teacher. She had two sisters who interacted with students. Mrs. Frances McGuire Weatherford was the visiting teacher and kept all truants in line. Another sister, Florine Ward, would come and read to us and tell us Uncle Remus stories. We students looked forward to those sessions.
Miss Margaret taught countless Oconee County children and helped form their character and cultural bearings. She made a tremendous contribution to our community.
