Martha Elder Harris

Watkinsville - In the early morning hours of September 29, 2005, Martha Elder Harris left her beloved family and friends to be with her Lord. She was born in Watkinsville on March 16, 1902 and was the only child of William Joseph (Joe) and Rachel Alice Shelnutt Elder.

Martha was a graduate of Watkinsville High School and the University of Georgia, being a member of Phi Beta Kappa Honorary Society. She went to Peabody College in Nashville for her masters degree and met James (Jimmie) F. Harris. They were married February 14, 1934. Jimmie preceded Martha in death on October 6, 1986.

Martha taught at Winder Barrow High School from 1951 until 1962. She began teaching at Oconee County High School in 1963 and retired in 1979.

Martha was a member of Watkinsville First Christian Church, where she taught Sunday School class until March of this year and had been secretary and treasurer of the Fellowship Guild for years.

Martha is survived by her three children, Jean (T. L.) Vaughan of Watkinsville, Dr. James F. (Jim and Andrea) Harris, Jr of Williamsburg, VA and Patricia (John) Mize of Summerville, SC.

She had six grandchildren, Todd L. Vaughan, Tedd H. (Bonnie) Vaughan, Jarrod T. Vaughan, all of Watkinsville, James F. (Trey) Harris, III of Williamsburg, VA, Tonya (Lee) Lancaster of Summerville, SC, Trent Mize of North Charleston, SC. She had five great-grandchildren, Ryan Vaughan and Dylan Vaughan of Watkinsville, Cory Lynne Harris of Williamsburg, VA, Ashlyn McGuiggan of Summerville, SC and Ben Mize of North Charleston, SC.

Funeral services will be Sunday, October 2, 2005, at 2:00 PM at Watkinsville First Christian Church, 4 North Main Street, with Rev. Brent Reynolds and Rev. Joseph L. Nunnally officiating. Interment will be in Watkinsville Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Saturday, October 1, 2005, from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Lord and Stephens Funeral WEST, 1211 Jimmy Daniel Rd., Bogart, GA.

Flowers are optional. Memorials may be made to Watkinsville First Christian Church, PO Box 287, Watkinsville, GA 30677.
