ANNA S. CURTIS
Mrs. Curtis taught English, Grammar and World History during my student years at Oconee High School from 1953 to 1958.
Before reaching High School, most of us had heard about Mrs. Curtis. She was a strict and challenging teacher who had taught at the College Level. She insisted on our learning correct grammar, English literature, poems and vocabulary words. We were assigned ten new words a week to look up the definitions and then we were tested on Friday. She counted it wrong for misspelling. In addition she required us to learn poems that we did not always understand and recite them in front of the class. Needless to say, these exercises stood us in good stead later in college, graduate schools, careers and life in general.
In addition to her teaching duties, she loved drama and play productions. She coached the Senior Play for several years. My Class of 58 performed Our Town and it was talked about throughout the community for years. She started the Drama club and the Thespians. She "herded" many of us (entire classes) by bus to Fine Arts Auditorium to see University productions.
Later she and her husband (Dr. Lawrence Curtis) went to Lebanon for agricultural research and teaching on a grant from the Ford Foundation. She was well traveled. Her teaching of World History became real when she talked about many places from her own experience.
Like so many, I was "scared" of Mrs. Curtis in the early years. I later learned to appreciate her and we became close friends. I respected her very much as a teacher and as a person. I corresponded with her and visited her for years- through college, the Army, and later during my legal career.
My wife and I along with Jimmy & Gayle Christopher accompanied her to Fine Arts Auditorium during the 70's and 80's for the UGA play season. I came to love her as a person.
Mrs. Curtis helped and inspired numerous Oconee County students for college and life's challenges. Oconee County is a better place because of her efforts.

ANNA S. CURTIS
The students of Oconee County were fortunate to have been exposed to Mrs. Anna Curtis. She was a teacher who demanded a student to think as well as learn. She challenged us daily in a way that we were unaccustomed.
I feel she was one of the teachers who made me prepared for college. I still remember her lists of word studies. I have run into those words often and think of her and her requirements.
Although I didn't see why she was so strict at the time, I realized later it was for our betterment that she pushed us to excel.
