Elmer N. Anthony
Elmer N. Anthony taught in the mid-fifties and served as Principal at the Bishop Grammar School. He served as Oconee County School Superintendent prior to the mid-forties.
Mr. Anthony was a person of many interests and talents. He was a minister with the Disciples of Christ—Christian Church. He served as minister for Mount Vernon Christian Church in Walton County for many years. He held numerous revivals in Northeast Georgia and around the State. He was well-known in the Christian Denomination and was highly respected.
Mr. Anthony also had large farming interests around High Shoals in the thirties and forties. His home is now part of the Family Life Complex on New High Shoals Road. He also operated the Watkinsville Cotton Gin after WW 2.
“Preacher Anthony†married, baptized and buried countless persons in Northeast GA in the 30’s, 40’s, 50’s and 60’s. Preacher Anthony was the “Dawson Family Ministerâ€. He preached the funerals for my grandparents: Cliff Dawson in 1949 and Hassie Daniell Dawson in 1955. He baptized me at Union Christian Church in 1950. He was very much loved and respected. To me, he has always been the epitome of a minister—how one should look—very wise and majestic looking.
