Description: Sammy Sanders, a Hart County native and veteran Army Officer, taught Vocational Agriculture at Oconee County High School in the late 50’s and early 60’s. He was FFA advisor.

Sammy Sanders was elected to and served in the position of Oconee County School Superintendent from 1965 through 1988 when he retired. He was Superintendent when the High School and Civic Center were built on GA Highway 53 in the early nineties.

Sammy Sanders later served as Mayor of Watkinsville for six years. Over his career, he was active in community affairs including several civic organizations---Oconee Jaycees, Watkinsville Civitans, Chamber of Commerce and a number of professional organizations.

He served Oconee County well in over 30 years of public service.

Sammy H. Sanders, 79, died on Saturday July 27, 2013.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 54 years, Faith; daughters, Cheryl Luker and husband, Donny; Carol Dellinger and husband, Randy; grandchildren, David Luker, Dana Luker, Claire Dellinger and Sanders Dellinger; and sister, Emily Gunnells.

Mr. Sanders was born on May 1, 1934 on a farm in Hart County, Georgia to Clemie G. and Lillie Bailey Sanders. He attended Hart County Public Schools, graduating in 1951. He received a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture from the University of Georgia in 1955 and obtained a Masters of Education in 1964.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1957-1959.

He taught vocational agriculture at Oconee County High School and was first elected Oconee County School Superintendent in 1965. He was re-elected seven consecutive times and served as School Superintendent for 28 years until his retirement in 1993. He then served as mayor of Watkinsville from 1994 until 2000.

He was a deacon and member of Beech Haven Baptist Church for 43 years and was also active at New Hope Baptist Church, Greshamville, Georgia.

The family will receive friends Monday from 6:00 – 8:00 PM at Bernstein Funeral Home in Athens. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, July 30, 2013 at 2:00 PM at Beech Haven Baptist Church in Athens. Interment will follow at Evergreen Memorial Park, Athens, GA.
