Annie Bray
Description: Mrs. Annie Bray

(NOTE: Mrs. Annie Bray taught 5th grade at Bishop for many years during the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s.)

Miss Annie Bray was my homeroom teacher at Bishop when I was in the 7th or 8th grade if I remember correctly. This was 1939 and 1940.

She was a Godly woman and a strong disciplinarian. She had Bible reading and prayer at the beginning of each school day. There were no "teacher's pets" in her classes as she
treated everyone the same. She always showed her care and concern about all of her students regardless of their economic or social standing. Except for Mrs Ida Branch, she probably had more effect on my early education than any teacher that I had. I loved her very much!

She carried us on a picnic one afternoon down to the Greenbriar Creek on the Astondale Road. She stepped on a rock and turned her ankle. I think it was broken because she had to use crutches at school for a while after that. As you know, she was a large woman and we had a hard time getting her back to the road.

I saw her only twice after we graduated from the 9th grade in 1941. In the early 60's, I went to her school at Watkinsville with a fellow Gideon (W. L. Amason) to distribute New Testaments to the 5th grade students. The other time was sometimes in the 80's when I attended a festival of some kind in Bishop. I was filled with emotion, even to tears, on both of these occasions just to be in her presence.

Years of Service: 1938 - 1969
